    • 1). Take your vehicle to the Arizona Motor Vehicle Division or a third party inspection office for inspection. The vehicle must be free of major safety and mechanical defects. The Arizona Motor Vehicle Department can deny your registration application if the vehicle has major safety and mechanical issues.

    • 2). Complete a vehicle emissions test. Any vehicle manufactured in 1967 or later must have an emissions test within 90 days of registration. Exempt vehicles include vehicles manufactured in 2007 or later, electrical powered vehicles such as golf carts and vehicles licensed in more than one state.

    • 3). Provide proof of insurance that meets state liability requirements. Your vehicle must have at least $15,000 in bodily injury coverage for one individual and $30,000 for two or more individuals. The insurance provider must be licensed to operate in Arizona, and your registration terminates if you fail to maintain valid insurance.

    • 4). Surrender your out--of--state registration and title when you submit your application. Arizona requires the registration even if your vehicle has an out--of--state lien.

    • 5). Provide all loan information on your vehicle.

    • 6). Sign the application. You may apply for a temporary registration if you do not have the required documentation. The registration remains valid for 90 days. The Arizona Department of Transportation computes the registration fee for the entire year from the date of the temporary registration. Obtain the application from the motor vehicle office on the day you register your vehicle.

    • 7). Pay registration fee. The one--time registration fee for a noncommercial vehicle with a gross vehicle weight of 10,000 pounds or less is $125. The one--time registration fee for a commercial vehicle weighing more than 10,000 pounds is $800. You must also pay a $4 title fee, $8 registration fee, an air quality research fee of $1.50 and a vehicle license tax. As of May 2011, the vehicle license tax computes to $2.80 for new vehicles and $2.89 for used vehicles.
