How to Draw Anime Costumes
- 1). Study the work of others to gain an understanding of how to handle the intricacies of cloth behavior in anime. Rent a variety of anime films; artists all handle the weight and textures of clothing differently, and watching is vital to learn the best ways to use line in costuming.
- 2). Gather clothes that you already have and draw them over and over. The more textures you have to choose from, the better. Lay them across objects, hang them, drop them on the floor; the variety will make your practice more efficient as you get ready to apply your lessons to an actual character costume. Enlist the help of your friends to provide outfits. Halloween costumes, dresses and pajamas will only add to your versatility.
- 3). Practice your line technique. Line is the most important aspect of an anime drawing. Anime artists draw with felt-tip pens and markers to add gesture to their lines that mimic those of a paintbrush. When practicing your line technique, use tracing paper as a tool to go over the same lines again and again with new techniques to experiment until you find a style that suits you best.
- 4). Make a formal plan for the drawings you want to complete. A camera is very useful to an anime artist; it is an excellent way to collect a variety of costumed images that allow you to study the shapes without the stress of your live models' constantly changing their folds by moving. (Even breathing will dramatically alter the folds of most clothing.)
