How to Title a Cobra Car in Virginia
- 1). Gather your title or MCO, bill of sale, proof of address and proof of purchase. If you don't have a title, you can order a new one from a DMV service center, complete "Application for Replacement and Substitute Titles" or online. There is a replacement title fee of $5 as of 2010. Proof of address includes a recent W-2, original monthly bank statement, utility bills, insurance bill, mortgage bill or U.S. postal change of address form. Proof of purchase includes a vehicle bill of sale or the seller's declared sales price completed on the title.
- 2). Complete an "Application for Title and Registration" form. This form is available at a Virginia DMV office or online. Enter the owner's full name, any lien holder information and the vehicle information.
- 3). Submit a Virginia title, proof of address and proof of purchase to a DMV representative. Make sure the "Assignment of Title by Owner," "Application for New Owner Certificate of Title and Registration" and odometer statement sections are complete. For out-of-state titles, complete the required seller, buyer and odometer sections.
- 4). Pay the $10 titling fee (as of 2010), plus 3 percent sale tax or $35 (whichever is greater). You will also need to pay the registration fee of $40.75 (as of 2010), if you choose to register the vehicle. Registration also requires proof of insurance.
- 5). Select an electronic or paper title. If you request an electronic title, the DMV will keep the title on file for you. You can request a paper copy at any time by going to DMV office. There is no fee for the first paper copy. If you request a paper title, the title will be sent to you in the mail.
