When we start a wooden project or contemplate one, some times it's because we have a special purpose for a pacific item.
Like maybe we want to put a cupboard in a certain place and can't find one to buy that will go there.
If we have woodworking skills we might decide to build our own, even if our skills base isn't quite up to the job.
Never the less we have a go, may be we have a plan in our heads of what to do.
We did basic woodcraft at school or collage and then think it will not be to difficult, so you measure up where you want the pacific project to go, you have a plan in your head that you then transfer to paper.
Hey presto! You have made a complete hash of it.
Even experience woodworker using bad plans can make a mistake, so you start again, this time you take your time an draw a plan again, taking into account all the joints and fixings you will have to make and that might be required.
You are ready to go! Hold on, I need the materials now, you go and buy the timber and fittings that you think you might need from looking at your plan.
You take the measurements from that plan and start to cut your timber, suddenly you realise that you haven't quite got enough timber, where did it go wrong, you measured everything, yes but did you make a cutting list on how you where going to get all your pieces out of the timber, did you allow for waste and off cuts? You buy more timber, then start to do your joints and special fixings.
Hang on a minute, this isn't right.
This should go there, may be I didn't measure it right? Now you are in a mess, the project that you thought would be relatively easy has turned in to a night mare, you have spent loads of money and the project isn't going right, it also doesn't look right.
The joints you made aren't quite right and it's not looking like what you had in your mind when you first started.
What shall I do now? You want it right and looking nice and you though woodworking as a hobby should be enjoyable, but now you are being stressed out because nothing seems to be going right.
Stop! Rethink, if you had proper plans in the first place, done by a professional, with proper cutting lists and lists of every thing that you will need, also special blue prints that show every detail of the construction, every joint to make, every cut to make, in fact everything that you need to know to make that project.
Wouldn't that be great? You will have that great looking wooden project if only you had followed the professional plans and taken your time.
Patience is the key, one step at a time.
Then everyone will admire the finished item.
You will get pleasure and fun from building the project.
