How to Grow Asparagus Densiflorus From a Seed
- 1). Rub the seeds between two pieces of sandpaper to scratch the outer shells then soak them in water for 24 hours.
- 2). Fill the cells of a seed starter tray with rich, organic potting soil. Press the seeds approximately 1/8-inch deep into the soil and cover them with loose layers of soil.
- 3). Place a humidity dome over the tray and place the tray in a location with filtered light and where the temperature stays between 75 and 80 degrees F. If necessary, use a heat mat under the tray to maintain consistent temperatures. Allow four to eight weeks for germination and keep the soil moist. Move the tray to a slightly sunnier location when the sprouts emerge.
- 4). Transplant germinated plants into larger pots or outdoors when they reach 6 inches tall. Asparagus ferns survive in most types of soil but will thrive in soil enriched with compost. Place them in a location with partial to full light. Keep the soil moist until the plants seem well established and on their way to healthy growth.
- 5). Fertilize asparagus ferns once in spring and once in summer, using organic fertilizer. Water ferns only when the soil dries out. Asparagus ferns are resistant to drought, but periodic watering is beneficial and encourages healthy growth. Over-watering, on the other hand, can lead to root rot or insect infestations.
- 6). Transplant mature potted plants to larger pots when the root ball starts to push up on or through the surface of the soil. If desired, split large plants in two, cutting through the root ball with a saw, and transplant the divided plant into separate pots.
