Meleager
Meleager was a Greek hero involved in the Calydonian Boar Hunt and the Argonauts' Quest for the Golden Fleece.
A prophecy told Althaea (Althaia) that her week-old son Meleager would die when the firebrand that was currently burning was consumed. Althaea carefully removed the brand and tucked it away into safety. When Meleager grew up, he joined the Argonauts in the quest for the Golden Fleece and the group who set off after the Calydonian Boar. A dispute over the kill, which Meleager wanted awarded to Atalanta, led Meleager to kill his uncles.
When his mother learned of their death, she took the peice of wood from its chest and let it burn completely. In that way, Althaea killed her own son Meleager, according to one version.
Meleager was the son of Althaea, but his father was disputed. It might have been the war god Ares or it might have Oineus, who was also father of Deianeira.
