How to Itemize Taxes When Claiming Dependents
- 1). File your income taxes using form 1040. Though you can claim dependents on either form 1040 or 1040A, you can only itemize your deductions if you use form 1040.
- 2). Report your dependents on line 6c. You must include each dependent's name, relationship to you, Social Security number and whether that dependent counts as a child for claiming the child tax credit. If you have more than four dependents, you must check the box under exemptions to show you are claiming more than four and attach another sheet of paper listing the required information.
- 3). Complete Schedule A, which allows you to list your itemized deductions. The total of your itemized deductions, which is found on line 29 of Schedule A, must be reported on line 40a. This amount will be used to decrease your taxable income.
- 4). Multiply the number of exemptions claimed by the exemption value -- $3,650 as of 2010 -- and report the total on line 42 of form 1040. This amount will be used to further reduce your taxable income.
