Woodlouse Hunter

• Dysdera crocata has a smooth, shiny surface and is colored red or reddish-brown on the carapace with a tan, gray or dull reddish-brown abdomen. Woodlouse hunters use their disproportionately large chelicerae to break the exoskeletons of woodlice, beetles and other small prey, and bite humans if threatened or disturbed. The painful bite of a woodlouse hunter causes intense local itching and irritation in a 4 to 5 mm area around the wound, but does not result in any systemic neurotoxicity or cytotoxicity.
  
  

Orb Weaver

• Arnaneus diadematus varies greatly in size and color. BugGuide.net states that more than 3,500 known species of orb weavers exist worldwide, with 180 being found north of Mexico. In Michigan, orb weavers appear black, brown, red or yellow with varying patterns in other colors on their legs and bodies. They take their name from the distinctive webs they weave, which make a radial pattern reminiscent of an orb or circle.
  
  

Northern Black Widow

• The Michigan department of natural resources lists Latrodectus variolus as a native species of spider. Its low tolerance to cold weather, however, makes the northern black widow rare in all but the Southern parts of Michigan. Female black widows have a distinctive red hourglass pattern on their abdomens. Both male and females also have broad red banding or spots about their legs and body, and a reddish tint to their otherwise black shell. At a glance, a black widow with sufficiently prominent red banding sometimes appears red, although closer examination reveals its glossy black coloring. While they are not typically aggressive, the spiders bite when disturbed. Anyone bitten by a black widow is advised to seek immediate medical attention.
  
  

Crab Spider

• Misumena vatia ranges in color from red to brown, and from bright yellow to white. They also display colored patterns on their abdomens. A crab spider's coloring matches its habitat, so crab spiders that live among mostly white flowers tend to be white, while those living in areas where the flora is red take on a red or reddish-brown coloring. The University of Michigan BioKids website also notes that some species slowly change their coloring to match a new environment. These spiders range from 1/10 to 2/5 inch long. They take their name from their tendency to walk backwards or sideways on their rear four legs while keeping their front four legs elevated; this gives them a similar appearance to many common types of crabs.
