How to Deal With Cultural Differences When Working in Customers' Homes

54
    • 1). Study the cultural background of your client. Be aware that cultural backgrounds change by regions. Asians from two different parts of Asia might have drastically different traditions.

    • 2). Ask your customer before you arrive at his house if there are any cultural traditions you should know about or abide by. Give the customer time to communicate the rules of his home to you.

    • 3). Communicate your needs clearly to the customer, especially if you suspect your needs might clash with cultural values. For example, your customer's cultural background might require no footwear in the house, but no shoes isn't a safe practice when performing renovations or other construction-type projects.

    • 4). Take a business-related multicultural class or workshop. These classes teach you how to communicate effectively with your customer so that you can accomplish your job without offending anyone.

    • 5). Be polite at all times. Use “please” and “thank you” often, and don't be afraid to ask for clarification. In turn, be clear about your intentions. Don't use jargon. Speak as if talking to a friend who doesn't know anything about what you do.
