How to Play Boules
- 1). Determine which team goes first with a coin toss. The starting team sketches a circle with a 20 cm diameter on the ground.
- 2). Stand in the circle and toss the target ball, called the "cochonnet," 18 to 30 feet from the circle. The same team that sketched the circle tosses the target ball. Any player on that team may perform the toss.
- 3). Lob the first boule from the circle, as close to the cochonnet as possible. Keep both feet in the circle until the boule lands. The coin toss winner makes the first boule toss. Any player on that team may go first.
- 4). Direct a player from the second team into the circle. This player also tosses a boule as close to the cochonnet as possible. The second team's boule may knock away the opposing team's boule to get closer to the target.
- 5). Determine which boule is closer to the cochonnet. The losing team continues to toss its boules until it gains a closer boule. The other team then does likewise. Players on a team may throw in any order. Players do not have to alternate turns, but each teammate must throw his own boules.
- 6). Toss the remaining boules. When no boules remain for either team count the points.
- 7). Give points to the team with the boule closest to the cochonnet. Each of that team's boules closest to the cochonet receives 1 point. For example, Team 1 has three boules closer to the cochonnet than the closest boule of Team 2. Therefore, Team 1 receives one point for each these boules. Team 1 leads 3 - 0.
- 8). Continue to play rounds until a team reaches 13 points. The first team with 13 points wins.
