Currently Popular Son Names for Girls

Now when it comes to the popular "son" names for girls, every single name on the list below was solidly a "boy name" for decades before it appeared on the girls name list. That goes for the name Alison too.

Alison was the first of the "son" names to start ranking on the girls list. In 1942 the name started consistently appearing on the name charts, and as it increased in popularity for girls, it decreased in popularity for boys. The same trend has occurred with all the other names below.

Are you wondering if the use of names ending in son has increased in popularity with time or decreased in popularity? What I did was sample the top 1000 baby boy names, every ten years since 1880. Here's what I found.

• 1890: 5 out of every 1000
• 1900: 5 out of every 1000
• 1910: 4 out of every 1000
• 1920: 4 out of every 1000
• 1930: 3 out of every 1000
• 1940: 2 out of every 1000
• 1950: 1 out of every 1000
• 1960: 2 out of every 1000
• 1970: 2 out of every 1000
• 1980: 31 out of every 1000 (Thank mostly to the popularity of the name Jason)
• 1990: 9 out of every 1000
• 2000: 21 out of every 1000
• 2010: 40 out of every 1000

How Son Baby Names have Changed in Popularity for Girls

Here's how it compares to son names for girls. Note: in 2000, parents began swapping out the o for a y. I've also included those -syn variations in the data below.
