Rosella
This rosella, a brilliantly colored parrot of the genus Platycercus, was photographed in New South Wales, but is common in most of Australia.
There are six species and several subspecies of rosella, the most common of which along the Australian east coast would be the crimson rosella (Platycercus elegans), the pale-headed rosella (Platycercus adscitus) and the eastern rosella (Platycercus eximius) which has as well been introduced into New Zealand.
The rosella is said to have been first sighted by the European settlers at Rose Hill, now Parramatta, west of Sydney in New South Wales, and was thus called Rosehill parakeet, which became rosehiller and then evolved into rosella.
Rosehill is now a separate suburb adjacent to Parramatta and is the site of Rosehill Gardens Racecourse.
