How to Fertilize Camellia in Zone 7
- 1). Plant camellias in rich, slight acidic soil for easy lifelong maintenance. Use a mixture of half organic compost and half natural soil at planting to provide the right mix of crumbly, nutritious and quick-draining soil. Camellias do best with a spring or fall planning -- early April or late October in Zone 7.
- 2). Give camellias new compost in April and October for continued soil quality, drainage and nutrition. Mix 3 inches of organic compost into the top 3 inches of natural soil around the base of each plant, then water each plant with 1/2 gallon of water to settle the new soil around the roots.
- 3). Fertilize camellias in April, after they bloom, with balanced fertilizer or fertilizer for acid-loving plants. Camellias do well with rose or azalea fertilizer. Sprinkle half of the recommended application around each bush's drip line in a wide circle -- away from their trunks -- and water with 1/2 gallon of water to disseminate the fertilizer. Camellias do not require frequent or heavy feedings, so hold your next feeding until the next year.
