New York City FC - New York City"s Soccer Team
New York is getting its second major league soccer franchises -- New York City FC. The new team will be based in Queens, New York City's easternmost borough, in a new stadium to be built in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. The soccer team is joining the New York Mets baseball team and the US Open Tennis Tournament at Flushing Meadows. It will be the 20th team franchise in Major League Soccer (MLS).
Team ownership is shared by the English Premier League soccer club Manchester City and the New York Yankees baseball team.
Expansion rights cost $100 million. The team should take the field for the 2015 MLS season, which starts in early March. (MLS regular seasons run from early March to late October.) NYC FC's new soccer stadium in Flushing Meadows, however, would not be ready for the 2015 season. Most likely the team would play in another temporary home for at least one year.
Claudio Reyna has been announced as New York City FC's director of football operations. The former Manchester City and U.S. midfielder will be in charge of recruiting players and staff, including a coach. Reyna grew up in nearby New Jersey.
Manchester City the majority owner of New York City FC is one of the premier soccer teams in the world. Although not as renowned as its cross-town rival Manchester United, Man City has developed into one of the best teams in Britain's top soccer league, winning the English Premier League title in 2012.
In 2008 Manchester City was purchased by Abu Dhabi United Group, an investment group led by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, a member of the Abu Dhabi royal family and a governmental minister of the United Arab Emirates.
The investment group has staked a huge investment in the team, paying hundreds of millions of dollars to acquire top players.
The other New York professional soccer team is the New York Red Bulls, which play in Harrison, New Jersey. This team was originally known as New York/New Jersey MetroStars, when formed at the MLS's inception in 1996. Then it was the MetroStars and nicknamed the Metros. The team was bought by Red Bull GmbH in 2006 and has been the New York Red Bulls ever since.
The league and the owners hope the two New York teams will develop some rivalry.
There was another professional soccer team based in Queens with a similar name to the new club. F.C. New York played from 2009 to 2012 in some of the lower professional leagues, most recently National Premier Soccer League in 2012. The team played at Belson Stadium on the grounds of St. John's University in Jamaica, Queens. It is no longer active.
FC is short for Football Club. That's football as in what the rest of the world call soccer. FC is common designation for team names in European and North American soccer leagues. In Europe, the English Premier League teams Manchester United's full name is Manchester United Football Club. It's usually called Manchester United or abbreviated to Man U. FC Barcelona, the football club that dominates Spain's top league, also uses the FC, standing for Futbol Club. It's commonly known as Barca or simply Barcelona.
New York City FC's managers are following this European naming tradition, rather than the more American-style names for professional sports, like the Portland Timbers, or even the sponsor named New York Red Bulls. The proposed nickname for the team is the Gothams. At least that's a little better than chanting NYC or FC at matches.
