    Electronic Fences

    • Electronic fences, also known as invisible fences, underground fences and radio fences, create a perimeter of electronic signals sent from a transmitter. The dog wears a receiver collar that is triggered when the dog nears the boundary. Most will make a noise to warn the dog it is approaching the boundary. If the pet attempts to cross the perimeter, the collar will send a correction in the form of an electric shock or squirt of citronella spray into the dog's face. Some communities ban the use of these systems, so be sure no local ordinances apply.

    Dog Runs

    • A chain link dog run can be constructed to contain your dog. A dog run can be whatever size you prefer, but usually are large enough for a dog house to fit in the run to provide shade and shelter for the dog and cover enough area for the dog to be able to run to get exercise. A dog run is fairly simple to install and materials are easily obtained at a hardware store. Some communities also ban chain link runs, so be sure it's legal before installing one.

    Cable Runners

    • A trolley, or cable runner, is a long, above-ground line --- similar to a clothesline --- attached between two poles or structures. The dog's lead is attached to the runner with a secured hook that allows the dog to run along the line. These devices can be dangerous if set up too close to obstacles that the dog could get hung up in. They also leave the dog vulnerable to predators and loose dogs.

    Friendly Fencing

    • This type of fence material was designed to keep deer out. It is constructed of PVC material that makes it appear invisible from more than 15 feet away. It can be installed by connecting it to trees around the yard's perimeter or attached to posts. This type of fencing material may be banned in communities that don't allow fencing.

    Portable Dog Pens

    • Portable dog pens come in a variety of sizes. You can put them up and take them down at will. Portable pens aren't usually strong enough to contain large dogs, but can be a handy solution for smaller dogs.
