How to Become an Electrician in Indiana
- 1). Complete your high school education or GED. You will need to meet this education requirement regardless of what state you work in. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a high school education is prerequisite to entering a training program as an electrician's apprentice.
- 2). Take courses in electrical technology from a school like the Electrical Training Institute in Indianapolis. These types of school can give you the necessary education to embark upon an apprenticeship program. Most apprenticeships do not require you to take postsecondary courses before you start working as an apprentice, but you may wish to do so in case you are competing with other potential candidates for the same apprenticeship.
- 3). Apply for an apprenticeship. In Indiana, you can do so through the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. You can also apply through other organizations such as the Central Indiana Independent Electrical Contractors Inc. and the Muncie Electrical Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee Program. An apprenticeship will take you about four years to complete and will provide you with the necessary experience to work as a licensed electrician. Throughout the program, you will work under the direction of a master electrician and earn money while you train. Most apprenticeship programs require you to complete additional coursework each year as well.
- 4). Submit the necessary forms to obtain your electrician's license in your community. In Indianapolis, you can do this after you have obtained a total of six years of experience. If you have taken college courses for two years, you can apply these to the experience requirement. With a four-year apprenticeship, this will make it possible to obtain licensing immediately upon completion of your program.
- 5). Take any licensing exams required by your local community. Indianapolis requires you to pass a licensing examination and meet all experience requirements before you can work on your own as an electrician. In some cases you may have to pass an interview process as well. Indianapolis requires both an interview and proof of insurance before you can obtain a license.
