Time Frame

• Puppies start to lose their teeth at 3 months of age, beginning with the incisors. At 4 months old, canine teeth and molars grow in. By 8 to 9 months old, the teething process is complete.
  
  

Considerations

• When puppies teethe, they often drool. The saliva helps lubricate and prepare the gums for tooth growth.
  
  

Warnings

• Puppies may drool excessively while teething. This may be a normal part of teething, or an indication of gum problems or an upset stomach. If you suspect a problem, take your puppy to the vet.
  
  

Prevention/Solution

• If your puppy drools, keep old rags or towels handy to wipe his face and paws. You can also put a bib around your dog's neck to keep the drooling contained.

• Most dogs have 42 teeth. Some breeds, such as Doberman Pinschers, have fewer, while spaniels and a few other breeds have more.
