Cause of Vomiting

• If your dog is vomiting because of illness or stress, then over-the-counter medication may be the way to go, but if your dog is vomiting because he ate your son's rubber ball, medicine is not the answer. In cases of harmful swallowing, your dog needs to vomit all of the foreign substance. If he doesn't, it can cause an obstruction in the intestinal tract, requiring surgery.
  
  

Fast

• A vomiting dog should fast for 12 to 24 hours before being given medication. This period allows your dog's stomach to rest and to get rid any foreign objects. After the first few hours, water and fluids are allowed, and Gatorade can be given to keep the animal hydrated. After 24 hours, boiled chicken and rice is recommended for a day, followed by gradually mixing in regular dog food over the next few days until your dog has returned to his normal diet.
  
  

Antacids

• If your dog will take a pill easily, antacids like Tums can be a great treatment for an upset stomach. Larger dogs can take the same dosage as a human, but a small dog should only be given half a tablet at a time.
  
  

Pepto-Bismol

• Pepto-Bismol is often recommended by veterinarians when a dog is vomiting. Give your dog 1 ml of Pepto-Bismol for every 10 lbs. of body weight every six hours.
  
  

Kaopectate

• Kaopectate can also settle a dog's stomach when he's vomiting. To treat your dog with Kaopectate, give 0.05 to 0.1 mg per pound by mouth every eight hours.
