How to Make a Van Accessible
- 1). Install the proper electronic lifting and lowering systems that are designed for use at the back of standard, commercial vans. Engineers designed these electrical units to lift out of the back of the van, lower to the ground and then lift the individual up and into the vehicle in a safe and slow progression.
- 2). Design a custom ramp that measures exactly the width of your open van door. Measure a gradual decline from your van door to the ground and create a gradual sloping ramp to use for easy access into the van. Add a side wall at least 2 inches up and off the ramp base, to prevent slipping from the ramp upon entry.
- 3). Extend the door width of your current van, using the expertise of an automotive professional. Many traditional van models have a sliding door on the side that opens a small entry to the van. With creative adjustments, you can make the van door into a double side-door that opens with two separate doors, creating a wide and easily accessible entry.
