• First, determine what you want to write about and who your audience is. A travel blogger just getting started will need to bring followers to the blog. Specializing in a topic can make it easier for you to market your blog. For example, there are any number of travel books and articles covering what to do in Washington, D.C.; Austin, Texas; and Portland, Oregon. Most of these travel books, however, probably don't cover the best late-night diners or the cheapest happy hours. By focusing, you can increase traffic to your blog because they are looking for specific information. In addition, by specializing, you can even get a city's locals to visit your blog.
  
  

Food Travel

• Focus your blog on food. Telling readers who travel where they can find the best breakfast or perfect cup of tea is a way to increase traffic and focus your travel blog. After all, travelers have to eat and knowing the best places is always helpful.
  
  

Arts Travel

• Try writing a travel blog on local art shows, art festivals or smaller art museums. Readers can have the chance to discover an artist they never would have at a larger museum or even be able to engage with an artist at a festival. Blogging about art galleries can also be a helpful angle.
  
  

Historical Travel

• Consider focusing on lesser known historical sites. A travel book can tell people to visit the Sherlock Holmes Museum or Charles Dickens' House in London, but your blog could direct readers to a favorite pub of the famous detective or writer. Travelers love an excuse to get off the beaten path.
  
  

City in a Day

• You may look at your information and realize that you don't want to specialize so much. Still, covering everything to do in a city takes you from blogger to book writer very quickly. Readers want information to be easily accessible. Try focusing your blog into a time limit. For example, if the blog covered how to visit a particular city in a day, you could give information about can't-miss sites and the best food. You could even include a couple shopping tips. This could be especially useful as many travelers end up in a city because of a layover or delay and only have a day to see the sights.
  
  

Open Ended

• There's also no reason you can't have a travel blog that covers whatever you want to. Some blogs talk about the best places to kiss in Paris (it is the city of love after all) or the day the writer was chased by a kangaroo in the Australian outback. At the end of the day, it is your blog. Decide the voice you want for your blog -- outgoing, informative or even eccentric -- and start writing.
