How to Get a Green Card to Come to America
- 1). Decide which category your situation applies to. You can get a visa for family-based, employment-based, or asylum- and refugee-based reasons. You can also sign up to the lottery system, either as an alternative or in addition to one of these applications.
- 2). Obtain the application form for EB-1, if you are applying under the employment category. This can be obtained from the U.S. immigration website or from an immigration lawyer. Check your education and employment history against the requirements before filling out the form. Submit the required documentation and processing fee with your completed form.
- 3). Contact the American Immigration Authority and fill in the family application form if you wish to apply for the family-based visa. You must have your family member, who is a citizen of the United States or has a green card, fill in the form as well. Submit all required documentation, proof of your relationship, and application form. To be classed as a family member, the U.S. citizen must be directly related by blood or you must be married to them.
- 4). Explain to border control or customs your situation, if you are seeking asylum or refugee status. You will be required to submit to holding conditions while your file is processed. Present any paperwork you have, and show why you think you will be persecuted upon your return to your home country unless asylum is granted.
- 5). Enter the Diversity Immigrant Visa Lottery (commonly known as the "green card lottery"). You can sign up online, entering your details and paying the small fee. More than 1,000 green cards are awarded randomly this way each year.
