10 Questions to Ask During 4D Ultrasound

Most mothers today undergo a 4D ultrasound to take a sneak peek at their babies before delivery. If you too wish to have one, it's better to ask these questions to rid yourself of any doubts about the ultrasound.

Q1: What machine is used?

This is an important question because if the machine is not an Expert or higher model machine, it will affect the quality and 4D ultrasound frame rate.

Q2. What does your package include?

Find out what the package includes, and if there are any extra charges. Enquire if they use DVD or VHS video and if they charge more. Find out if photo prints are done on copy paper or high-gloss photo paper.

Find out if you have to pay more to get facial images if the baby does not look at the camera. In case you have twins, find out if you will be charged more for your 4D ultrasound images.

Q3. Is there accommodation for my family?

Find out if there is accommodation available for your family if they will be accompanying you. Some clinics have sufficient room for a large machine, a comfortable scan bed and your family.

Q4. Is your staff professional and qualified for 4D ultrasound imaging?

Your diagnostic scan should be done by a medical ultrasound facility or at least an expert at taking 4D ultrasound images. This is because the techniques used for taking 4D ultrasound images are completely different from 2D ultrasound techniques.

Q.5 What are the differences between 2D, 3D and 4D ultrasounds?

2D images are black and white images used for diagnostic scans and help technicians evaluate the baby's internal organs. 3D and 4D images give surface images that are more realistic to the common man. The difference between 3D and 4D images is that 3D images are still images while 4D images are moving videos.

Q.6. Is 4D ultrasound imaging safe?

Studies over 35 years have proven that ultrasounds cause no harm to mother or baby.

Q.7. How long will it take?

This is usually based on your package; and may range between 10 to 25 minutes. However it's better to spend at least at least 30 - 60 minutes with the technician for better scans.

Q.8. When can I have a 4D ultrasound?

It is recommended to have one between the 26th and 34th week of pregnancy, though you will be able to get images of your baby anytime after the 22nd week.

Q.9. Will I always get beautiful pictures of my baby?

No promises are made for beautiful pictures; but technicians will always work at getting the best pictures possible. However if the baby is looking face down it will be difficult to see your baby's face to take pictures.

Q.10. How much does it cost, and is 4D ultrasound covered by insurance?

There are different packages meant to suit everyone's budget. However presently, insurance does not cover ultrasounds as it is an elective procedure and does not replace your doctor's order for an ultrasound. This is why ultrasound expenses have to be borne out of your pocket, and will not be covered by your insurance policy.
