Fruit Flies

• 1). Cut a circle out of a piece of a standard-sized piece of construction or notebook paper. The circle should be just about as big as the piece of paper.
  
  
• 2). Fold the circle in half, then fold it in half again. Unfold the circle and you should see four triangles. Cut one out.
  
  
• 3). Tape or use a paper clip to secure the two cut edges together to form the funnel. Cut 1/2 inch off of the bottom of the funnel to create a hole.
  
  
• 4). Pour about an inch of apple cider vinegar or place a slice of banana inside a jar. Sit the funnel inside the jar. Remove the tape or paper clip from the funnel and push the cut edges further away from each other to make the funnel smaller, if needed. Reapply the tape or paper clip when the funnel is the correct size for your jar. The fruit flies will smell the vinegar and banana and go inside the funnel to get the food. The funnel prevents them from coming back out.
  
  

No-See-Ums

• 1). Eliminate any standing water in the environment, such as bird baths, children's pool or buckets full of water. No-see-ums breed in such spots, then lay their eggs on moist soil.
  
  
• 2). Install an electronic bug zapper in your environment. The light in the zapper will attract the no-see-ums, and they will die once they make contact with the zapper.
  
  
• 3). Spray insect repellent that contains DEET on you and in the affected area. Botanical repellents made from citronella, eucalyptus or other plant extracts are typically effective in repelling and getting rid of no-see-ums.
