How to Obtain a Federal Tax ID in Texas
- 1). Determine whether you already have a federal tax identification number. An application for a new tax ID is not required if you already have one. If you have misplaced or have forgotten your tax ID number, call the IRS at 800-829-4933 and an operator will assist you in recovering your existing tax ID number.
- 2). Apply for a tax ID number on the Internet by visiting the IRS website and navigating to the employment identification number page. The IRS website page will guide you through an online interview, in which you will be asked a series of questions. Answer all questions as completely and accurately as possible.
- 3). Print out your confirmation page that appears after your tax ID interview. This confirmation page serves as evidence of your federal tax ID number and can be used to open business accounts or for tax purposes. Keep your tax ID number in a safe location.
- 4). Mail a completed application for an employer identification number (Form SS-4) if you prefer not to send your information over the Internet. This form can be downloaded from the IRS website at no cost or can be obtained from an IRS office. Send the completed application to:
