Develop a strong pre-shot routine. A golfer of any ability level does not have the ability to focus for four to five straight hours. However, they can focus for the 30 to 60 seconds before each shot. Observe any golf professional and you will notice they go through the same routine before they hit any shot. During this routine, they are visualizing the shot they are attempting to hit. They then develop the physical feel of the shot with a practice swing. In addition, they are picking out the target of where they want to hit a shot. - 2). Play within yourself. The physical ability must be there to hit a successful shot. If you cannot hit a golf ball 115 yards, develop another game plan to get across the water. Lay up closer to the water and then hit your ball.
- 3). Develop a healthy mental approach to hit the shot. Often golfers look at the water and think "Don't hit it in the water." They then proceed to hit the golf ball in the water. The golfer is so concerned with the water that he tends to visualize or remember the negative experiences more often than the positive. They remember they have hit in the water before, and each time faced with the same situation, their thinking becomes "Don't hit it in the water."
- 4). Hit the shot with confidence. A lower handicap golfer knows the water is there, but he recognizes only the target. Focusing on the target and not on the obstacles helps golfers hit more successful shots.
