Soil for Pepper Plants
- Good soil for peppers should be well tilled and aerated, with high levels of organic matter. Adding manure to the soil is helpful if available. Rich, loamy soils are best; avoid soils that are dominated by clay.
- Peppers need soil that is evenly moist, but well drained. Do not let water saturate the soil or gather in pools on the surface. Look for soil that breaks apart in your hand when you squeeze it.
- Peppers grow best in soil that is neutral to slightly acidic, with an ideal pH range between 6.0 and 6.8.
- Warm soil is best for optimal growth. Peppers are sensitive to frost, and grow poorly during cold weather, so plant them in a sunny location.
