How to Make an Edible Cell Model Using Food

32
    • 1). Grease a round cake pan with cooking spray and heat your oven to the temperature listed on the box of yellow cake mix for a round cake pan. Blend the cake mix, 1 softened stick of butter, 3 eggs and 1 and 1/3-cups of water in a mixing bowl using an electronic or manual mixer until no lumps exist in the batter. Pour the batter into the cake pan and bake for the time described on the cake mix box and then remove from the oven.

    • 2). Allow the cake to cool completely and remove from the cake pan, placing the cake on a clean plate. Cover the entire cake, top with white icing to represent the cell cytoplasm and the sides of the cake with chocolate icing to represent the cell membrane. In the center of the cake, make a 2-inch diameter circle in pink frosting using the cake decorator tips; this represent the cell nucleus. In the middle of this pink circle, create a yellow circle with a ¾-inch diameter that represents the nucleolus. Around the pink circle, create a line of chocolate frosting to represent the nuclear membrane.

    • 3). Draw long, skinny blue lines with the cake decorator tips, directly outside the pink circle. Make this first set of lines smooth to represent the smooth endoplasmic reticulum and make a second set of blue but jagged lines to represent the rough endoplasmic reticulum.

    • 4). Place red, candy-coated chocolate pieces in random places outside the cell nucleus; this represents the lysosomes in the cell. Place one orange, candy-coated chocolate piece ½-inch outside the nuclear membrane to signify a centrosome. Place a few blue jelly beans outside the cell nucleus to represent the vacuoles.

    • 5). Draw 4 large, almond-shaped spots of pink icing outside the cell nucleus. Lay a curved gummy worm across each almond shape to represent the cell mitochondria. Sprinkle round cake sprinkles over small patches of the cake, outside the cell nucleus to represent the ribosomes. Shred up a piece of grape bubble gum and place in a wad on the cake to represent the cell's Golgi body.

    • 6). Cut skinny sections of paper and write the names of each cell part onto the paper. Use small piece of tap to tape the paper labels to the ends of toothpicks. Place the tooth picks into the cake onto or directly beside the modeled part of the cell.
