NASA researchers conducted a study that looked at the effect some common household plants had on some common space-craft pollutants. These pollutants also happen to be common in homes. The results show that many plants are capable of reducing household toxins. Three particularly common plants may be an alternative to an air purifier. - Bamboo palm absorbs and reduces formaldehyde levels in the home. Formaldehyde is a toxic chemical found in several kinds of building material as well as common household items. It is found in plywood and grocery bags, cigarette smoke and wax paper. Bamboo palm needs moist soil and indirect, but bright light to flourish.
- Peace lilies remove both benzene and trichloroethylene from the air. Benzene and trichloroethylene can be found in inks and paint. Benzene is also found in gasoline and synthetic fibers. Trichloroethylene is prevalent in varnishes and adhesives. Peace lilies easy to find and easy to care for. They require enough water for the soil not to dry out and should be kept out of direct heat.
- Spider plants reduce formaldehyde. They are easy to care for, require minimal water and are hardy enough to survive without it for a significant amount of time. They reproduce easily and are an option for the corner of the room or a plant hanger.
