Now more than ever, we are using social media to communicate with friends, family, and total strangers.
Sometimes we don't have a clue about what we are doing.
And it's when we frivolously use social media, we get in trouble.
Over the last few years, a few online blunders from politicians, celebrities, and sports stars have booted them out of the respective limelight.
Any one of us could be next.
Here are three points to consider if you use Social Media websites: The First Rule: Think Sounds simple doesn't it? Well, most people just send off tweets, rants, and comedic gestures only to be burned.
You see when we use Social Media we basically are allowing our lives to be recorded forever.
So, that stupid thing you said five years ago is still out there.
Does it Matter? Over the course of the last seventy years many new work place laws have been established, such as you cannot ask a woman if she is pregnant or wanting to get pregnant, you cannot ask for a potential employers age in a variety of setting, for example.
All of these were put in place to protect the employee for a variety of discrimination opportunities.
These work place discrimination violations are real.
Laws were set in place to prevent work place violations by protected classes.
Yet, many people throw out these protections (in a round-about way) by putting up all this information online about themselves anyway! Second Rule: Spend Time Figuring Out Your Privacy Settings Reading the privacy page and figuring out your settings seems like the most boring things in the world, right? But do this first! If you start your social media site and skip your privacy settings, most likely you will forget.
Third Rule: Monitor Yourself Okay, so you set your privacy settings.
You don't share a lot of information about yourself.
You're careful about what you say, etc.
But then you go to a party, get drunk, and your best friends (emphasis on more than one) take pictures of each other that include you and post them up online - using Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and their personal blogs.
Since they are all tied to you, it will be easy to find those "compromising" photos in just a few clicks! If you are not careful your friends could be the weakest link.
Your friends and their friends privacy settings also matter to you as well.
So you need to constantly monitor what is being said about you and what photos you are tagged in.
