How to Remove a Slip-on Muffler From a Honda Motorcycle

    • 1). Remove any retaining springs securing the slip-on muffler to the exhaust header pipe, using pliers or a hooked exhaust spring-puller tool.

    • 2). Loosen the exhaust pipe clamp securing the slip-on muffler to the exhaust header pipe, using a flat-head screwdriver or a 10 mm socket and a socket wrench.

    • 3). Unscrew the nut from the slip-on muffler's hanger bolt, located either behind the muffler or attached to the top of the muffler hanger strap, using a 14 mm socket and a socket wrench.

    • 4). Slide the muffler hanger strap off of the slip-on muffler, if applicable. Pull the slip-on muffler off of the exhaust header pipe, using a slight twisting motion.

    • 5). Clean the slip-on muffler's mounting flange with a parts cleaning spray to remove built-up carbon deposits. Use a razor blade to remove any high-temperature sealant attached to the flange.

    • 6). Coat the slip-on muffler's mounting flange with a high-temperature sealant, then push the flange onto the exhaust header pipe. Loosely tighten the exhaust clamp, using a flat-head screwdriver or a 10 mm socket and a socket wrench.

    • 7). Slide the muffler hanger strap onto the muffler. Attach the hanger strap to the bracket built into the right rear passenger peg or onto motorcycle's frame. Slip the muffler hanger bolt through the hanger strap and the bracket, then loosely screw the hanger bolt nut into place with a 14 mm socket.

    • 8). Reposition the slip-on muffler with the exhaust header pipe until they are aligned evenly. Tighten the exhaust clamp, using a flat screwdriver or a 10 mm socket and a socket wrench. Tighten the exhaust hanger nut, using a 14 mm socket and a socket wrench.

    • 9). Reattach any retaining springs removed earlier, using pliers or an exhaust spring puller tool.

      Clean the muffler and exhaust header pipe with window cleaning spray before starting the motorcycle to prevent fingerprints from being burnt permanently into the metal surface.
