How to Close Computer Back Doors
- 1). Discover the name of the trojan you were infected with by downloading a program called HijackThis. This creates a report of everything that is running on your computer while allowing you to record any suspicious programs or files running on your computer.
- 2). Update your operating system and every piece of software on your computer including drivers. In addition, change your passwords and password protect your important documents.
- 3). Turn on your firewall if it is not already on. This is the main line of defense in regards to protecting your computer. If it is not enabled, malicious files can freely enter your computer.
- 4). Install a spyware scanner if you do not have one. Many scanners such as Spybot-Search & Destroy, Ad-Aware and Spyware Doctor are available. Ideally you want to have more than one spyware scanner installed on your computer to increase the odds of most malicious files being found.
- 5). Restart your computer and boot into safe mode. Once in safe mode, perform a full-system scan using your anti-virus program and spyware programs. Once completed, view the results to ensure the suspicious files and programs you found have been removed. Then boot your computer into its regular mode.
- 6). Scan your computer once again regardless if the programs or files were removed. If you find the programs or files are still running, manually remove the trojan itself. Find the name of the trojan using Remove Backdoors in "Resources." If you do not feel as if you are adequately skilled in removing the trojan, get extra help: Posting your HijackThis log you saved in Step 1 on a PC help forum or even your local PC repair service is a great start.
