Spain Rentals: The Basque Region

6
The Basque country in Northern Spain is probably one of the country's most celebrated regions in literature and the culinary arts. Bordered by the Bay of Biscay, this region shares a border with France and the La Rioja wine regions, with the river Erbo forming a beautiful boundary with the Erbo Valley which is famous for its Rioja wine.

This region is also blessed with a wonderful rugged coastline that is shared by the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. The northern regions of this area are known as Green Spain, with wonderful year-round oceanic climate while the rest of it has a dry, continental climate with cold winters and warm summers. The region is industrially well-developed with several important towns and ports. Basque cuisine is also the most famous in Spain.

Villa rentals here range from beautifully restored 17th century stone mansions with spectacular sea and mountain views, to charming rural cottages set in picturesque vineyards, farm-buildings and also delightful country homes. Bilbao and San Sebastian are the areas which are most popular among tourists and these towns offer lovely beaches, entertainment and historical sites.

Rentals in Deva offer the added attraction of having several thalassotherapy spas nearby. This is a great way to rejuvenate and refresh yourself with the use of pure sea water, sea-weed, mud taken from the sea-bed, other healing herbs and elements. Water and marine sports, cycling, trekking, hiking and walking tours in the nearby mountains are available for sports enthusiasts, while children and youngsters can avail of the entertainment centers in nearby San Sebastian.

On the French border, villa rentals in Oiartzun located close to the French resorts of Biarritz and San Juan de Luz, are another good option if you're looking for a different experience, far from the usual tourist circuit. A country-style, self-catering house with a private pool and garden can be shared by family or friends groups.

San Sebastian also offers some great villa rental options. The world-famous San Sebastian Film Festival in September makes it an annual destination for the celebrity A-listers. This is also the time when the annual Basque Week festivities begin and features a plethora of art, literary, music and cultural events. The rowing competition is another big attraction. Self-catering villas for large groups and families are available at reasonable rates if you book early. San Sebastian also has some very charming farm-houses for rent and these offer a rural setting which is peaceful and tranquil yet within easy reach of the entertainment hot-spots.

The famous finger food of the Basque region - pinxtos - is one of the highlights of this area and a villa rental here could offer you the chance to sample this in plenty!
