The Literal Light at the End of the Tunnel
The Spanish Lighthouse was first built by Spanish colonizers in 1836. The first one was replaced by a taller lighthouse built by the Americans; this structure was destroyed during the Japanese invasion. Today, a more modern solar-powered lighthouse stands on the same site, the highest point on the island at 600 feet above sea level. A gift shop and snack shop stand at the foot of the lighthouse.
