- Lasers can be used to kill fungus while leaving the surrounding tissue unharmed. Small studies of this treatment's use have shown positive results, according to the Foot and Ankle Center.
- The laser used in toenail fungus treatment doesn't affect surrounding tissue, so there is no pain. No side effects, adverse reactions or complications have been recorded, according to the Foot and Ankle Center.
- The Noveon laser uses light at two different wavelengths to hone in on the fungus. This type of laser is also used in hair removal, dental work and cataract surgery.
- Patholase has also developed a laser for treatment of toenail fungus, but "The New York Times" questioned the FDA's approval of the laser in March of 2009.
- Insurance companies see toenail fungus treatment as aesthetic and will not cover laser treatment. Laser treatment usually costs between $600 and $1,200.
