Preschool Puppy Training (Part 5) - The Stay Command at 10 Weeks

20
When the puppy is 10 weeks old, you should start the next step in preschool puppy training.
In this phase you have to introduce the puppy to the "stay" command.
The reward to be given in this stage differs from that given in the previous article on fetch-sit game and you must carefully take note of that.
You will notice that your puppy starts tiring at the completion of each 10 minute game.
If he gets fatigued and does not continue retrieving the play toy, you should not give any eatable to encourage him.
If you give eatable at this stage it will appear as though you are giving the puppy a reward for quitting the game.
You must end each of these game sessions with the command "sit", place the puppy in that position and then shower him with praises as an award.
No eatable to be given.
Coming back to this week's session on training; you must realize that that kindergarten training is primarily meant for educating a puppy how to learn; so far the puppy has been exposed to the words "sit" and "come".
Now, we are going to introduce the word "stay" when the puppy is ten weeks old.
Since we did not teach the puppy any other command other than those commands given above we cannot blame the puppy for not obeying the commands which we have not taught.
Please understand that these actions are not performed on his own; also he is not expected to do this at this age.
You should keep in mind that we are teaching the puppy how to learn.
Introducing the Stay Command You must expose the puppy to the word "stay" when it is 10 weeks old at the time of fetch-sit games to improve the vocabulary of the puppy; this can be done in the following manner.
During the fetch-sit games, when the puppy is sitting, do not throw the play immediately.
Place your hand on the rear of the puppy to ensure that he is in a sitting position and give him a "stay" command firmly and in an authoritative voice; add emphasis to it by placing your right hand at puppy's eye level with the palm open.
After this you can throw the play toy again for fetching.
In case the puppy is reluctant to go and fetch the toy you should praise him immediately and say "Okay, get the toy.
" When he moves to fetch the toy you should stop him by saying "No!" and take him back to the same spot where he was sitting earlier in order to reinforce the command to stay.
For a few seconds he should be made to be in that sit-stay position and then release your hold on him to facilitate retrieving the toy; this should then be followed by the usual praise and at the end of the training period give him his treat reward.
