Directions for Simple Macrame Plant Hangers
- 1). Cut four pieces of hemp twice as long as you want each arm of your hanger to be, plus a foot. Cut four more pieces of cord about six times longer than the other pieces. For a planter with 2 foot long arms, you'll need four 5-foot pieces and four 30-foot pieces.
- 2). Divide your cords into two groups of four. Each group should have two shorter and two longer cords in it. Gather the ends of the cords in one group together. Bend the ends down over the cords to form a loop. Push the ends through the loop and tighten to make a granny knot. Repeat with the other group.
- 3). Lay your first group of cords out in front of you. Arrange them so the shorter cords lie parallel between the longer cords. They are cords A to D, from left to right. Bring cord A under the center cords and over cord D. Bring cord D to the right over the center cords and up through the loop created by cord A. Pull the cords to tighten your first half knot.
- 4). Continue tying half knots to about halfway down the cords. Repeat with the second group of cords, which are 1 to 4, from left to right. Turn the first group so cord A is closest to you and the ends of the cords point right. Lay the second group perpendicular to the first with cords 1 to 4 lying over top of A to D. The ends of the second group of cords should point toward you.
- 5). Weave cord 1 under cord D, over cord C, under B and over A. Weave cord 2 over D, under C, over B and under A. Weave cord 3 as you did cord 1 and cord 4 as cord 2. This creates a mat in the center of your hanger to support your pot.
- 6). Continue tying half knots in both sets of cords to about 2 inches from the ends. Tie both sets of ends in a granny knot. Pry open your 3-inch jump ring with a pair of pliers. Bring all four arms up together, making sure they're even so the pot will sit level on the central mat. Wiggle the granny knots onto your jump ring and squeeze it closed.
