Can You Hook a Portable Hard Drive to a Charter DVR?
- You cannot connect an external hard drive to your Charter DVR if it is a Motorola 3416 or 6416, Pace TDC779X or Scientific Atlanta 8000 or 8300 model DVR. These DVRs contain USB ports but aren't capable of recognizing an external hard drive. You can only connect an external hard drive to a Moxi 3012 or 9012 model DVR.
- Your Moxi DVR interfaces with any external hard drive that contains a USB 2.0 port, a minimum rotational speed of 7,200 revolutions per minute and a buffer size of 8 megabytes. USB 1.0 hard drives aren't compatible with your Moxi DVR. You will also need a USB cable if the cable isn't included with the hard drive. Your Moxi DVR’s USB port is on the back of the device.
- Use the external hard drive only with your Moxi DVR. Disconnecting the drive from your Charter DVR and connecting it to your computer erases any programs or movies you may have on the device. Also, do not store any pictures or music files on the device – your DVR won't recognize the files.
- Your Moxi DVR will automatically detect the external hard drive and prompt you with a message asking if you want to format the drive. Use your Charter remote control to select “Format.” The formatting process takes approximately 5 minutes and your DVR will inform you when the process is complete. You can also access your external hard drive’s "Format" utility, as well as recording settings, by selecting “Settings” from the Moxi menu. The Settings menu also contains a “Disconnect” utility to lets you uninstall your external hard drive from the DVR's configuration before physically removing the device in the event you no longer want to use the drive.
