How to Keep the Dog From Digging in the Garden & Flowerbed
- 1). Walk or, preferably, jog your dog and play active games for at least an hour each day to assuage his natural desire and need for exploration and exercise. Take different paths each day and visit different dog parks to prevent boredom. Walking keeps your pet entertained and expends energy that would otherwise be spent digging in the yard.
- 2). Fill a kiddie pool with sand and place it in an area of the yard away from garden plants. Bury dog toys, treats and bones to provide an incentive for digging in the designated spot. Rotate the rewards on a regular basis to keep your dog interested in the digging space.
- 3). Train your dog for 15 minutes each day to assuage its intellectual curiosity and increase discipline. One early command you can teach is “No digging!” When you see the dog digging in the garden, say firmly, “No digging!” and lead or carry it to the designated digging area.
- 4). Provide a continuous supply of fresh, clean water if you keep your dog outside. Lack of water may cause the dog to dig in an attempt to locate fresh water or escape.
- 5). Install a dog door leading to the fenced yard to allow your dog to come and go as it pleases. This will prevent the dog from digging out of loneliness.
