Couples Voluntary Counseling and Testing or CVCT is a cost effective strategy in decreasing the rate of new HIV infections. In poverty stricken lands, like Africa, CVCT is one of the prevention strategies that can work miracles. Through CVCT, couples are able to identify the ones who do not share the same HIV status with their spouses or partners. This allows them to effectively benefit from the vaccine. It's like knowing how much detergent soiled nursing scrub tops need in order to keep the quality at the best state possible, enabling longer service. When HIV status of a person is revealed, he or she can get the vaccine according to the need so as to enable the immune system keep its best state possible.

Should this be widely practiced even in developed countries like the United States of America? We know the U.S. have a better strategic plan in fighting HIV/AIDS because it has better means of providing antiretroviral treatment (ARVT) to more people. Nonetheless, the absence or slim percentage of couples deciding to undergo CVCT in the country, newly infected individuals are not able to get ARVT soon enough. In Uganda, for instance, there is a lack of male involvement in HIV education, leaving the women unable to practice what they learned since men are the decision makers. If CVCT would be widely practiced by couples, new infections will be given ARVT soon after the virus becomes detectable. Getting antiretroviral treatment early on improves their odds. Pregnant women can also reduce risk of transferring the virus to the unborn child.

What would CVCT do besides enabling couples know their HIV status and getting the antiretroviral treatment? They can plan and work things out for the future accordingly. As couples, married or not, they can plan about having kids. Would they have their own children, or go for another option that is to adopt? This way, the rate of mother-to-infant HIV transfer could decline significantly. If they already have children, they will also be able to give their kids the treatment necessary.

In some cases, CVCT can provide utmost preventive benefits to couples who did not have sexual relations yet. Undergoing HIV screening before entering marriage is a notable practice of a religious group called Jehovah's Witnesses. As part of their sex education, individuals who have had sexual relations before joining the organization and are already planning to get married are advised to get screened. That way, couples would be able to decide for themselves whether or not they are willing to take chances and pursue with marrying. Further, they are advised to persuade their partners to get screened when they suspect infidelity that involved sexual relations with another individual. HIV is detectable after six months or so after contracting the virus.

The U.S. wasn't able to dodge economic crisis. And as high health insurance rates aggravate the country's constrained economy, the American people also need effective strategies of preventing HIV/AIDS. Ask your trusted professional in lab coats about CVCT to help you and your partner weigh its benefits. There is no cure for AIDS yet, and prevention is the best way to keep the fatal illness at bay.
