P-40 War Hawk Was Sturdy and Well Armed
Introduced in 1938 the single seat, the P40 single engine plane was introduced into the armed services.
It was an airplane that was all metal construction and was designed to be a fighter craft with a dual role of providing ground attacks.
Because it followed on the heels of the P-36 Hawk, with a few major changes it was enlisted much quicker than most of the other planes.
The P-40 was used by all the allies during WW II and served with honors until the end of the war.
The US Army gave the name War Hawk to all of the P-40 models.
The British and Soviet forces called it the Tomahawk or Kittyhawk.
While the P-40 was not known because of it's ability to out maneuver the Japanese aircraft, or match their success in a slow speed turning dogfight, it did have specific strengths.
The P-40's were able to Dive faster and they were built to be sturdy.
They were well armed and could out roll any aircraft, with grace and precision.
One of the groups that is best known for using the P-40 was a unit of the Chinese Air Force, known as the Flying Tigers.
This group was the first American Volunteer Group to serve before the US officially declared war on December 7, 1941.
The Flying Tigers were made up of US Aviators looking to assist the war efforts.
The group was divided into 3 different squadrons.
They were named the "Adam and Eves", the "Panda Bears", and the "Hell's Angels".
Their main tactic was pursuit of the enemy aircraft in air-to-air dogfights.
The Flying Tigers became a very successful and popular group back in the states.
Much of this was because of their success in destroying 115 enemy aircraft while only losing 4 of their own during air-to-air battles.
One of the keys to their popularity came as international groups of journalists reported on the successes during a 6 month period in history that helped to excite the folks back home and boost the morale as well as the support for the war.
One of the best feats of the Flying Tigers was known as the "boom-and-zoom".
This tactic was to dive in at high rates of speed, unload it's weapons and then zoom away.
There were also other USAF groups that used the P-40 between 1941 and 1945.
The majority of the fighting during 1942 and 1943 was carried out by these groups in this aircraft.
While engaged in battle in the Pacific the P-40 worked along side the P-39 and the US Navy's F4F Wildcat to gain battlefield advantage and eventually crush the Japanese's ability to perform in the air during this critical period.
