Solar Home & Garden

2
Now summer is almost over and the days are getting shorter and it won't be long before we are getting home from work in the dark.  But we can still benefit from the sun's energy long after it has disappeared over the horizon.

Today's Solar industry offers us a wide choice of products for our home and garden that allows us to harness the sun's energy, from Photovoltaic (PV) home energy systems to path lights that come on as we walk to our door.  With the concern over climate change and the pressure from world leaders to reduce global carbon emissions this has attracted significant investment to the industry, bringing both improvements to efficiency and new product development.

Solar efficiency has improved over recent years through investment in research and development and purchase prices have reduced through manufacturing process improvements, making solar micro-generation systems more affordable.  Legislation has also helped; utility companies are now obliged to pay consumers with renewable energy systems for each unit of electricity they generate.  This payment, called a Feed-in-Tariff, is also tax free and continues for 25 years making the systems more than pay for themselves.

Solar products available for our home extend beyond energy generation to include decorative and practical products for our enjoyment and security.  Products are now much improved from those plastic solar lights from the local garage forecourt that barely lasted one season.  Modern solar products offer features such as Solar on Demand that stores the sun's energy and allows us to use it when we want or PIR (passive infra-red) that switches the light on as we pass, and the good quality products come with a guarantee.

Product design and use has also changed.  In addition to the traditional post lights strategically placed to create feature parts of the garden many products are now designed as features themselves.  Statues have solar lights to illuminate them, lanterns add light to the garden furniture, and solar light trees and stepping stones enhance patios or decking areas, the list goes on.
