How to Reduce Perfusion Complications

2
    • 1). Avoid staying immobile for long periods of time. Immobility involving sitting, standing or lying down in one place for long periods can lead to the formation of blood clots in the legs. These clots can travel to different areas of the body and clog arteries that deliver blood to organs like the heart. This blockage prevents perfusion of organs. Make frequent position changes, walk and exercise your limbs when your are immobile to prevent perfusion complications related to obstruction of blood vessels.

    • 2). Take all medications prescribed to improve tissue perfusion. Medications such as digoxin and anticoagulants are indicated in the prevention of perfusion complications. Digoxin helps the heart to be an effective pump and increase blood supply to the body. Anticoagulants prevent the formation of blood clots which can cause perfusion complications. Take these and all other medications as prescribed.

    • 3). Avoid activities that can cause dehydration, diarrhea, vomiting or excessive bleeding. Loss of fluids or blood from your body through any of these processes can reduce the amount of blood you have in your body. A reduction in blood volume leads to underperfusion or hypoperfusion of tissues and organs. Stay hydrated by drinking 2,000 to 3,000 ml of water a day. Report cases of disturbing diarrhea and vomiting to a health care provider and seek emergency medical services in cases of excessive bleeding.

    • 4). Avoid wearing constrictive clothing. Outfits that are too tight may cut off circulation of blood from one part of the body to another. Don't cross your legs too frequently, this hinders circulation of blood to and from your lower limbs.
