How to Make an Easy Baby Sling

1
    • 1). Pick a fabric that is soft, strong and durable. Remember that cotton will shrink when washed, so wash and dry the fabric before cutting in order to prevent shrinking after the product has been made.

    • 2). Purchase a piece of fabric that is 60 inches wide and 15 feet long to provide for shrinkage.

    • 3). Cut the fabric into long strips that are between 20 and 30 inches wide and 15 feet long. If the fabric does not shrink much, this will create two slings.

    • 4). Hem all four sides of the fabric. You may also serge the fabric if you have a serger or access to a serger at a sewing machine store. Or, take it to a tailor or dry cleaning store and request that the sides be hemmed or serged, usually for a small price.

    • 5). Fold the fabric in half lengthwise. Place the middle of the fold in the center of your belly, around the belly button. The folded edge of the fabric will be at the top with the opening in the fabric facing downward.

    • 6). Wrap both ends around your waist and then cross them over behind your back to form an "X." This will move the section of fabric on your belly up toward your chest.

    • 7). Bring one end over each shoulder and gently tug down to tuck under the piece of fabric across your middle.

    • 8). Cross the pieces underneath the fabric on your belly and pull around your waist to tie in the back. If there is excess fabric, bring both ends back around your waist to tie in front.
