Adelaide Festival 2004
The 2004 Adelaide Festival of the Arts ran from February 27 to March 14. A special highlight of the Adelaide Festival was the inclusion of 20 shows exclusive to Adelaide and 10 world premieres.
Among the events lined up for the 2004 festival were I Bought a Spade at Ikea to Dig My Own Grave, a play by the radical Spanish company La Carniceria Teatro ? which means "The Butchery of Theatre"; a wordless Canadian stage adaptation of Nikolai Gogol's The Overcoat; a new Australian opera about the beach; Welsh singer Bryn Terfel; and a concert by Australian acts Tex Perkins, The Whitlams and george.
The premiere of a one-man show by Aboriginal performer David Gulpilil presented the actor and his life within two sharply contrasting cultures. The show, Gulpilil, toured after the Adelaide Festival and was to be performed at Sydney's Belvoir St Theatre and at the Brisbane Festival.
Adelaide Festival 2004 artistic director Stephen Page (who is also artistic director of the indigenous Sydney-based Bangarra Dance Theatre) said at the October 14, 2003, launch of the festival that the program marked a return to the traditional festival mix of ticketed theatre, dance and music shows, as well as low-cost and free public programs.
Bestselling Chilean novelist Isabel Allende and British crime writer Reginald Hill, author of the Dalziel and Pascoe books, were among 22 international wriers invited to attend Writers Week from February 29.
The festival's middle weekend highlighted the annual WOMAD, a celebration of women's works in the arts.
Featuring in dance were Conjunto di Nero, the Australian debut of Emio Greco and Pieter C Sholtein's collaboration; and a triple bill from Bangarra Dance Theatre, which included the world premiere of Unaipon.
The next Adelaide Festival of the Arts will be in 2006 with 2004 Sydney Festival director Brett Sheehy taking over the reins of the Adelaide Festival.
