Complaints

• The L.A. Superior Court reports cases tried under the criminal justice system are filed by a prosecuting agency, such as the L.A. County District Attorney and L.A. City District Attorney. Criminal courts within L.A. County hear cases from cities including L.A., Long Beach, Santa Monica, Burbank and Pasadena.
  
  

Training

• According to the Criminal Justice Institute (CJI), Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley established CJI to provide specialized training for law enforcement agencies and court prosecutors within Los Angeles County. CJI provides training courses including DNA evidence and foreign extradition within Los Angeles County.
  
  

Types

• Within L.A. County, different criminal justice cases are tried in different ways, according to the court. Infractions, such as motoring violations cannot be prosecuted with a jury trial and cannot result in county jail time. Misdemeanors, in most cases carry a maximum fine of $1,000 and one year county jail time. Felonies, including murder, rape and robbery are punishable with county jail time or death.
