How to Survive on a Long Haul Flight
Being on a plane for upwards of 10 hours is by no means easy.
You don't really do it every day either.
It's only if you have to go visit family that lives really far away or your company just decided to send you off to fix some business deal or something like that.
There's always the amount of excitement inside that wants to go and visit someplace new and expand your horizons.
And then there's the point where you're wondering, "Why am I even here, and why didn't I just stay home??" Then when it seems like you've been on the plane for years, all you want to do is survive.
I've tried to stay away from all of the advice that you get from every other person that you ask.
This is just some of the things that I've learned from experience.
• Book a direct flight.
If you can't, make the connection in the first half of your flight, not the second half.
• Bring noise-canceling headphones or earbuds.
They help filter out cabin noises.
• Take your shoes off.
Allows your feet to expand as you go higher in elevation, more comfortable.
Just make sure that you will be able to put your feet back into your shoes after the flight.
• Do things that make your eyes tired.
Reading, shopping in magazines, watching movies, shows, etc.
on entertainment system will all make your eyes very tired.
• When you are awake, try to get up and walk for about 10 minutes every 2-3 hours.
Go to the bathroom during this time, stretch, and fill up your water bottle if you have one.
• When eating meals, don't choose the meal that has eggs.
It will give you a stomach ache.
• Before your flight, try not to eat a whole lot, and drink plenty of water because you will get dehydrated on the plane.
• When in your seat, periodically stretch your legs and arms.
• If you're hungry, don't hesitate to go to the galley and ask for something to eat.
For example, Cathay Pacific will give you cup noodles, ice cream, crackers, etc.
for no additional charge.
They will also give you different kinds of fruit or deserts from the last meal.
• When you want to sleep, cover your head with the blanket that is provided, along with as much of your body as possible.
If you don't want to cover your head, ask for eye shades/covers.
They make it easier to fall asleep.
• When traveling to a foreign country, and you want to somewhat learn about that place, watch the tourist information videos that the airline has and if you want to, watch a movie or two in that countries language with subtitles in your language.
This is how I've picked up some of my Chinese.
I hope this has been helpful to your preparations for your trip, and by all means, if you don't want to do something that I've suggested, don't do it.
Have a safe flight!
