Proper Attire for Cruise Ships
- Just about every cruise has at least one or more formal nights, and there is a dress code for dining. Women are required to wear cocktail dresses. Men have a choice; they can opt for a tuxedo, or choose a dark suit and tie. Men who either don't own a tux or don't choose to pack one can rent a formal outfit on the ship. It's also expected that you remain in your evening outfits for other venues around the ship, such as the theater or casino.
- Evenings that aren't designated as "formal" require a smart casual look on most cruise ships. Women can choose from dresses, skirts, or dress pants, while men are expected to wear slacks and a collared shirt. Shorts are never allowed in the dining rooms during dinner.
- If you're going swimming or catching rays on deck, bathing suits are fine, but you'll be expected to wear a coverup when you wander away from the pool. (Tip: bring two bathing suits, so you'll always have a dry one.) Otherwise, shorts, sweaters, light jackets, casual slacks and sports clothes are fine for other areas of the ship and ports of call. Comfortable walking shoes or good sneakers are commonly worn during the daytime around the ship, while flip-flops are fine around the pool.
- While it may sound like you need to bring half of your closet for a cruise, smart choices can lighten the load while letting you look your best. Choose items that can be mixed and matched; a blue blazer works with just about anything for men, while women can coordinate skirts, slacks and tops in various combinations.
- Forgot to pack a necktie? The gift shop will have several from which to choose. Did your clothes get horribly wrinkled during your trip to the port? Some ships have laundry rooms with ironing boards, and all offer dry cleaning/laundry services.
