  Pediatric oncology is a medical field concerned with the study and treatment of childhood cancers. The most common types of pediatric cancers are blood cell disorders (leukemia) and cancers of the brain and central nervous system. About one in every 10,000 children in the United States will develop a form of cancer.
  
  A wealth of resources are available for parents of children with cancer, medical professionals seeking training in field, students who wish to become pediatric oncologists, and individuals looking for information on clinics, hospitals, specialists, support groups, and services.
  
  

Pediatric Oncology Education Program

• St. Jude Children's Research Hospital offers a pediatric oncology education Program (POE) which provides research experience for students training for careers in psychology, medicine, nursing, public health, and biomedical science. The POE is geared toward encouraging the next wave of medical professionals to specialize in research and treatment of childhood cancers and accepts about 50 students per year from a variety of medical disciplines at at various stages in their academic education, from undergraduates to graduate students.
  
  Participants focus on medical or clinical research projects and are provided with housing and a stipend.

Pediatric Oncology Resource Center

• The Pediatric Oncology Resource Center (PORC) is an online resource created for parents of children with cancer. PORC offers comprehensive, free educational materials on childhood cancers, contact information for support groups, links to family support services, guides on treatment, survivorship, grieving, and "dos and don'ts" handouts for friends and family.
  
  PORC's site also provides medical reference materials, information on upcoming childhood cancer symposia and ways to get involved for those who want to help.
  
  PORC also links to sites geared to kids with cancer, where they can read each other's stories and network with other children coping with cancer.

Children's Brain Tumor Foundation

• The Children's Brain Tumor Foundation (CBTF) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1988. CBTF's mission is to improve the quality of life for children with cancer and their families through education, support, and research.
