Potty Training Boys Versus Girls
When you start boy potty training, keep in mind that there will sometimes be subtle differences between that sort of training and what you might do for a girl. It isn't that the two genders are being stereotyped, because after all, most of the basic methods will be the same in either case. But potty training a boy does involve certain extra elements that usually don't appear when you're trying to train a girl. So you'll need to keep these in mind, and not expect boys and girls to be exactly alike.
With boy potty training, it may be necessary to wait a little longer to start. Girls in general just seem ready to make this change somewhat sooner than boys are. But this doesn't suggest the girls are smarter, because as well as understanding the concepts, the child needs to be both physically and emotionally prepared. For this reason, potty training readiness may come more quickly for girls, who tend to mature emotionally a little sooner than boys do. And a boy's physiology may not develop the ability to stay dry through the night as quickly as a girl's does.
But when you do eventually tackle things, potty training boys will present other difficulties too. For instance, if you've got a son who runs around at all times, or is outside the yard and plays hard for hours on end, he may be less inclined to choose to interrupt himself and go to the potty. When potty training boys as compared to girls, you could find yourself needing to do rather more wheedling and luring in order to get your child interested.
Even the potty training products you use may differ between boys and girls. Certainly, when choosing a toilet seat or potty chair, you'll want one with a guard in the front to prevent splashing when peeing. But other materials, like books or charts, may also need to be more engaging and interesting. And of course boy potty training also requires a dual learning process, that of sitting down for bowel movements, and eventually standing up for urination.
So keep all these things in mind when doing your training, and recognize that the process will be somewhat different for a boy than it is for a girl.
