What to See and Do in Marrakech

11. Fine Dining at Top Marrakech Restaurants

I had some of the best meals of my life last time I visited Marrakech. I was staying at my favorite Riad, the Riad Kniza, and they made reservations for me at several of the restaurants listed below. Marrakech has many elegant restaurants where you can dine and feel like royalty. The entertainment that comes along with dinner is worth the check at the end. Restaurants I highly recommend include:
If you are looking for a nice place to have a drink, check out the Cafe Arabe, Bo-Zin, or the bar at La Mamounia (worth a look if you can't afford to stay).

12. The Saadian Tombs

The Saadian dynasty ruled much of southern Morocco during the 16thand 17th centuries. Sultan Ahmed al-Mansour created these tombs forhimself and his family in the late 16th century, 66 of them are buriedhere. The tombs were sealed up rather than destroyed in the 17th centuryand were only re-discovered in 1917. Consequently they are beautifullypreserved and the intricate mosaic is stunning. Despite being situatedin the heart of the somewhat hectic old town (medina) the tombs aresurrounded by a nice peaceful garden.

The tombs are open daily except Tuesday. It's advisable to get there early and avoid the tour groups.

13. Take a Caleche

A caleche is a horse-drawn carriage that can be hailed at anytime, there are loads of them outside the main gates of the medina, and easy to find just off the Djemma el Fna. The most common route is around the old walls of the medina, the ramparts and then on to the gardens in the Palmerai. If you've ever taken a horse and carriage ride in any town, you'll know it's a lovely, romantic experience. Although haggling for the price beforehand may get frustrating, just ask others what a decent price is, and stick to it. The best time to take a ride is late afternoon, and then on your return, stop and have dinner at the Djemma el Fna.

14. Maison de la Photographie

The Maison de la Phtographie is a relatively new museum in Marrakech. It opened its doors in May 2009, and has been getting rave reviews since. It's easy to see why. With a private collection belonging to Patrick Manac’h et Hamid Mergani, of more than 3,500 photos, this photography museum offers an amazing insight into Morocco's history. Beautiful black and white portraits puts you right in the mood to head back into the souks to see the real thing. The museum is open every day from 9.30am to 7pm and costs DH40 to get in. There's a nice rooftop terrace to relax on before you head back into the fray.More »
